Artistry in Wire: BrookeLynn’s Home Barware Glass Techniques & Finishes
Welcome to the BrookeLynn's Home Barware Glass Technique Glossary — a celebration of the artistry and intention behind every handcrafted barware glass. Here, I invite you to discover the hand-painting methods, gilding techniques, surface treatments, and finishing details that transform each glass into a one-of-a-kind piece designed to hold both a beverage and a moment. Whether you are a design lover, a fellow maker, or simply curious about the quiet craft behind the glasses you raise, this glossary offers a poetic and practical guide to the artistry that shapes every piece we send out into the world.
Hand-Painting (Brushwork Application) Hand-painting is the heart of Artistry in Pouring. Using a deliberate, patient process, I apply color and design directly to the exterior of each glass — layering brushstrokes, building pattern, and guiding the brush into a finish that feels both intentional and alive. No two glasses are painted the same way, and no moment is rushed — each piece is built to be as individual as the occasion it will hold.
Metal Leaf Gilding (Metallic Accent Application) Metal leaf gilding draws on an age-old tradition of hand-applying delicate sheets of gold, silver, or copper to a surface. I work with careful, deliberate placement — pressing each fragment of leaf and smoothing it into the design to create a luminous, dimensional accent that catches the light differently from every angle and adds a warmth no machine could replicate.
Surface Etching (Textured Detailing) Surface etching is the art of applying a treatment to the glass exterior that creates a frosted, textured pattern — adding a layer of depth and visual interest that lives beneath the shine of the glass itself. I use etching to build refined detailing that gives each piece a tactile, handcrafted quality you can both see and feel.
Color Layering (Dimensional Color Building) Color layering is the process of building up multiple coats of paint to create richness, depth, and a finish that shifts subtly in different light. Rather than applying a single flat coat, I work in layers — allowing each one to cure before the next is added — so the final result has a dimensional quality that feels genuinely handmade from every angle.
Surface Preparation (Glass Priming) Before any finish is applied, each glass is meticulously cleaned and treated to ensure the surface is ready to hold paint, metallic leaf, and sealant beautifully. This foundational step is invisible in the finished piece, but it determines everything — a well-prepared surface means a finish that lasts and looks intentional from the very first use.
Protective Sealing (Finish Preservation) Protective sealing is the final layer applied over all hand-painted, gilded, and etched surfaces — locking in the artistry and protecting every decorative detail from everyday wear. I seal each glass with care, working to ensure the finish is smooth, durable, and fully cured before the piece is ready to leave the studio.
Glass Form Selection (Shape & Occasion Curation) Not every glass shape serves every moment equally. I select each glass form — rock, pub, pilsner, or stemless wine — with intention, choosing shapes that serve both the occasion they were designed for and the artisan finish they are built to carry. The right form is as much a part of the design as the decoration itself.
Edge & Base Finishing (Final Refinement) The rim and base of each glass are carefully inspected and refined to ensure a smooth, comfortable, and polished feel — where the decorated exterior meets the functional edge cleanly and safely. This finishing step is where the piece moves from decorated to complete.
Batch Production (Small-Batch Crafting) Every Artistry in Pouring glass is made in small, intentional batches — never rushed, never mass-produced. Working in batches allows me to give each piece the time and attention it deserves while maintaining a consistent standard of quality across every glass that leaves the studio.
Quality Inspection (Final Review) Before any glass is ready for its new home, it undergoes a detailed inspection. I check for finish quality, edge safety, color consistency, structural integrity, and overall cohesion — making sure every piece reflects the care and intention behind the Artistry in Pouring collection before it is released.
Artistry in Pouring: Care & Cleaning (FAQ)
How do I clean the decorated exterior of a glass? Dust gently with a soft, dry microfiber cloth for routine care. If needed, use a lightly dampened cloth and wipe gently — never soak or submerge the exterior, and dry the outside immediately after any contact with moisture.
Are the glasses dishwasher safe? No — hand-finished surfaces should never go in the dishwasher. The heat, pressure, and detergents will damage the decorative exterior finish and can compromise the glass itself over time. Always hand wash with warm water and mild soap on the interior only.
