Caring for Your BrookeLynn's Home Scented Candle

To ensure a safe and long-lasting experience, follow these general candle care instructions:

Before Each Burn

  • Trim the Wick: Always trim the wick to 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) before lighting. A shorter wick creates a smaller, more controlled flame, which helps prevent black soot from forming on the container and ensures a longer, cleaner burn.
  • Check for Debris: Make sure the wax pool is free of any wick trimmings, matches, or other debris. Debris can act as an additional wick, causing a larger, more dangerous flame.

During the Burn

  • First Burn: The first time you light your candle, allow it to burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted to the edge of the container. This is crucial for creating a "memory pool" and preventing "tunneling," where the candle burns straight down the middle, leaving unused wax on the sides.
  • Burn Time: Do not burn candles for more than four hours at a time. Extended burn times can cause the wick to "mushroom" and the container to overheat, which can affect the fragrance and pose a safety risk.
  • Avoid Drafts: Keep your candle away from open windows, fans, or air vents. Drafts can cause the flame to flicker, leading to uneven burning and excessive soot.
  • Extinguish Properly: Use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame. This prevents hot wax from splattering and minimizes smoke. Avoid blowing out the candle, which can create a smoky mess and cause the wick to shift off-center.
  • Reposition the Wick: After extinguishing, if the wick is not centered, gently guide it back to the middle of the wax pool while the wax is still soft. This will help ensure an even burn for the next use.

After Use and Storage

  • Cool Completely: Allow the candle to cool and the wax to completely harden before trimming the wick or moving it.
  • Discontinue Use: Stop using the candle when there is about 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) of wax remaining at the bottom of the container. Burning a candle all the way down can cause the container to overheat and crack.
  • Store Correctly: Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This helps preserve the fragrance and prevents the wax from fading or melting. Use a lid to protect the candle from dust and debris when not in use.
